The requirements for terry towels are becoming increasingly demanding. More and more customers are looking for products that match their exact specifications. One important factor in this context is the weight of a towel, which can be specified in different ways. Below, we explain what this means and why it matters.

Towel Weight and Fabric Weight – What Do "Before Washing" and "After Washing" Mean?

When terry towels are washed for the first time in an industrial laundry, the natural swelling properties of cotton cause the fabric to shrink. While the weight of the individual towel remains unchanged, the fabric weight (grammage) changes considerably.

For example, a towel measuring 50 × 100 cm with a surface area of 0.5 m² before washing may measure only 47 × 90 cm after washing and drying. Although the towel still weighs the same, its surface area has decreased by more than 15 percent. As a result, a towel originally specified with a fabric weight of 500 g/m² will have an effective fabric weight of approximately 575 g/m² after washing due to the increased fabric density. This also results in higher resource consumption during industrial laundering.
